This article discusses the idea that PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and SUD’s (Substance Use Disorder) are linked, meaning that people with PTSD “are 2 to 10 times” (Ford, J., 2007 p) more likely to suffer from SUDs and visa versa. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the relationship between the disorders and find a way to treat patients for both without disrupting the treatment of one or the other in any ways and allowing patients to recover from both disorders in a safe and healthy manner. I chose this article to use to support my sub topic of the importance of counseling because this article demonstrates how leaving PTSD untreated like it is for a lot of veterans who either are afraid to seek help or don’t know where to start can develop into other issues such as SUDs. I think it is important for all people in a job with the potential of PTSD to provide counseling for their employees. As a police officer if you’re involved in a shooting you are required to be cleared through a physic evaluation. Our veterans deserve the same amount of help yet so many go without it and why this is happening is a question I would like to know. I feel like there is a link to many war injuries and abusing the pain management pills given that can correlate with PTSD and SUD and is not widely discussed or sought to find better ways to cause better outcome for these men and women and more effort should be put forth.

The purpose of this article was to help display all of the programs and help available to all of the people that serves in the armed forces and some of the obstacles or barriers they face and programs that help them overcome these. I like this article because it gives me information that helps support all 3 of my subtopic well. I think it is important for veterans to know what kind of services they can utilize as civilians especially ones like seeking loans to buy a home for their families. Many veterans are homeless and with the help of job training the programs that allow veterans to get home loans at lower interest rates would allow lower payments and a quicker pay off period. VA hospitals are a great resource for veterans who haven’t found healthcare with a job but knowing all the places you can go for help is important and I don’t think the information is widely known or sought out and that should be changed. It is important to ask questions. This article makes me want to use my degree to further the availability of information and resources for veterans.
