Competency Statement II
To advance physical and intellectual competence
Physical
As a preschool teacher, I make sure that our daily activities support my children’s
physical development. My children have multiple opportunities to go outside on the playground
daily. If the weather permits, we go on a walk to explore the neighborhood. They are encouraged
to travel down the hall in unique ways, such as skipping or tiptoeing.
Cognitive
In my classroom, I provide my children with many opportunities to explore their growing
cognitive skills. The activities build on skills they have already learned while providing new
challenges to expand their learning. They are allowed to manipulate a variety of materials and
explore different methods of problem solving throughout the day.
Communication
In the preschool classroom, I provide many opportunities for open communication and
development of early literacy skills. During circle time, each child has an opportunity to ask
questions and tell the group about their night or weekend. The children are also given
opportunities to draw letters or write throughout the day.
Creative
My classroom has multiple areas where children are encouraged to explore their
creativity in different ways. They read in groups of their own to make their own stories all with
the pictures in the books. They are encouraged to use their imagination throughout the day and
no matter what area we are exploring.
