Unit 5 - Topic 5: Atlantic Revolutions Comparison (AMSCO pgs-293)

American Revolution

1765-

French Revolution

1789-

Haitian Revolution

1791-

What factors caused this revolution? Be specific.

Taxation from the British caused mass outrage, and when revolts began in Boston, the Boston Massacre occurred. This caused American Colonists to start revolts and delegates were making decisions that Parliament would make.

King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette’s lavish spending and the inability to rule or manage the government required the Estates General to be summoned for the first time in over 100 years. The voting system made the Third Estate feel overruled by the other 2 estates, meaning that the peasants and average civilians were not going to see change. The Tennis Court Oath then made the Third Estate join until the King listened to their demands.

There were 500,000 slaves, and only 40,000 whites. There were also 30, people of color that were free. The French Revolution challenged Slave Labor, which was triggered by rumors that Louis XVI declared an end to slavery. This caused 1,000 plantations to burn.

What were the desires/goals of Revolutionaries?

The goal was to become independent from Great Britain. The Colonists had enough of taxation and persecution by the Britain colonies.
