Adverse Childhood Experience Study Reaction Paper

I aspire to have a profession in the health field; however, I am unsure of what specifically I want to be. However, the ACEs study can be applied and used as key reference points in the many different subfields of health.

Adverse Childhood Experiences link multiple negative events in childhood trauma to violent behavior later in life. Therefore, trauma screening can be done as a part of a wellness checkup or as a follow up if the physician is concerned about their patient showing some key behaviors associated with ACEs. In addition, if the physician comes to understand and acknowledge that a patient has adopted unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance use, excessive or inadequate eating habits, drug use, high amounts of high-risk sexual relations, etc., a referral to a trauma center or to visit a counselor may be highly advised or required.

Moreover, an ACE score was developed to determine the likelihood a child is to suffer the adverse consequences of childhood trauma. Therefore, a high ACEs score indicates that the likelihood of ailments increases significantly. Ultimately, if a physician gets an understanding that a patient may be experiencing ACEs, they may quickly ask the ten questions on the ACEs test, determine their score, and broadly assess their condition. If the patient is of high risk, the physician may want to refer them to a specialty doctor who can treat them optimally.

In order to prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences, a stable and loving environment for a child to grow and thrive in is essential. Therefore, there are numerous ways a physician can act as a preventative barrier to reduce incidents of ACEs from affecting innocent children ranging from informing parents and making them more aware of what actions can effect their child or asking a teenager some questions just to make sure they are fully okay.

Personally, I understood the common notion that a lot of children are being maltreated and having their childhood taken away from them. However, I did not know that there was a science or study behind it. I believe that as college students, we are lucky to be learning about this topic at such a vital stage in our lives because when we assess our behavior and try to come to the root cause, most of us will then understand that because of the ACEs study, we can imply that our childhood is what influenced this. Moreover, educating ourselves about prevention strategies will help stop the chain of ACEs from going onto future generations.

This topic makes me curious and eager to find out more. When I found out my ACEs score, I was not where I expected to be placed on the scale. I always thought that I can overcome what negative memories I have of the past and be a better person. However, this study proves that a majority of the time, most individuals fall into the negative consequences of ACE. Therefore, researching and educating myself on the effects that I may experience later in life and ways to prevent it is definitely one of my short-term goals.

The ACEs study was the perfect topic that make me more interested about this course. My generation has evolved a lot from our parent generation, because of that we are feeling the brunt of it. Whether it is feeling the pain of letting our parents down to possible being disowned by our parents for being a different “normal” than what they grew up being, we all need some type of counseling in our life. Many of us would be ashamed to seek help regarding our
