Chapter 8
Pain
What is Pain?
Nursing Pain Interventions
and Standard
Pain is whatever the patient say it is
Pain is influenced by many variables:
The individual experiencing the pain
The cause of the pain
The environment
It may arise from:
A new source
An old injury
Nerve pain
The cause of pain is sometimes unknown
Pain relief rest primarily with the nurse who must assess the
patient and implement interventions.
Most nurses believe that pain is easily managed with analgesic
drugs; however, patients report the pain remains moderate to
severe despite the use of this medications.
Joint Commissions published standards for the management of
pain for all patients.
Healthcare faculties are expected to comply with these
standards which include:
Prioritizing pain assessment and pain management
(including safe opioid prescribing)
Involving the staff in improvement activities related to
quality care and patient safety
Assessing and managing patient’s pain while minimizing
risks of treatment
Collecting and analyzing data related to pain interventions
Physiology of Pain
The perception of pain involves afferent pathways, the central
nervous system, and efferent pathways.
Afferent pathways are activated by pain receptors called
nociceptors.
These pain receptors are unevenly distributed in muscles,
tendons, subcutaneous tissue and the skin.
Pain receptors are sensitive to:
- Chemical Changes
- Temperature
- Mechanical stimuli
