IV Therapy
Administering liquid substances directly into a vein that can be intermittent or continuous for
medication, supplemental fluid or fluid replacement.
. Assess IV site / position
. Elevate extremity
. Encourage motion
. Infilration or extravasation
. Tightness or coolness of skin
. Pain around the IV site
. Infection / Cellulitis
. Fluid overload
. Educate patient about the procedure
. Advise of any pain at the site of the IV
. Advise of any changes
. Avoid getting it wet or bending at the site of the IV
. Do not adjust the flow of the IV
. Increased immune response
. Monitor vital signs and flow rate
. Assess improvement of vital signs
. Pre: check order, hand hygiene, obtain baseline
vitals, gather all necessary supplies, identify
allergies, identify vein
. Intra: Apply tourniquet, select vein, clean area,
insert catheter, remove needle, dispiose of correctly,
apply dressing.
. Post: Chart the procedure, continue to monitor IV
site for any changes, assess vitals.
