  1. Market Revolution - A period where new technology and inventions modernized America and its business
  2. Cotton Gin - an invention that helped speed the production of cotton and made the economy rise

  4. Missouri Compromise - an agreement that divided between slave and free territory.
  5. Transcendentalism - a philosophical movement that believed in the idea of finding peace and truth within nature and literature.
  6. Seneca Falls Convention - a meeting where women demanded the right to vote discuss about the injustice
  7. Nullification Crisis (1832) - conflict where South Carolina demanded that they have the right to not agree to the federal laws. It showed how other states were

  1. Describe how the Market Revolution changed the United States economically and socially. Which groups of people benefited from these changes, and why?

The market revolution included an era of new technology such as the cotton gin and telegraph. The cotton gin increased production and changed the economy. Businesses began to bloom faster with the use of a telegraph. Society started to change and become more accepting of women and immigrants to work. People became aware of social problems and new groups arose. Immigrants benefited the most from all this because of the many jobs available.

  1. What were the goals of the Temperance movement and other social reformers of the 1820s? What types of people led and participated in these movements?

The temperance movement had the goal to limit the consumption of alcohol. Other groups were fighting for the right of education, and other groups were to have equal rights for women. Most of the people in these groups had great confidence and would speak their mind. They were people that were aware of their surroundings and had a greater sense of morality.

  1. Explain the purpose and methods of the abolitionist movement. What was the Southern response to the abolitionist movement?

The abolitionists movement was a movement to eliminate slavery. Most abolitionists found ways to convice others to eliminate slavery such as writing books and publishing newspapers. The southerners wanted to pretend like they did not hear the arguments, so they forced the ̈gag rule ̈ which prohibited the discussion of slavery.

  1. Why did Andrew Jackson decide to destroy the Second Bank of the United States? What were the consequences of this action?

Jackson decided to destroy the second bank of the United States because he believed it was hurting the economy. This resulted in the creation of corrupt banks and spread of valueless paper currencies.

  1. Describe some of the characteristics of the urban industrial middle class of the 1800s.

Most middle class consisted of skilled workers, not too poor but not too wealthy, mid-level bureaucrats, humble. They usually were also outspoken about certain issues.

  1. What were the reasons for high levels of immigration to the U. during the mid-1800s? How did Americans react to this wave of immigrants?
