Uniforms for public-school children The concept of schools having uniforms is still new in the U. It was not popularized until the late 90s, which started when “Long Beach, California, adopted a district wide mandatory rule on uniforms for all elementary and middle-school students” [ CITATION Lew97 \l 1033 ]. It is still debatable whether school uniforms are genuinely accepted by the student and parent body. However, public schools should enforce school uniforms on children because it takes away their focus from clothes and appearance, it increases their safety, and it positively impacts their preparation for the future.

First and foremost, the most beneficial aspect of having school uniforms is the ability to go to school every day without having to decide what outfit to wear. It was found that in adolescents, mostly girls, there is peer pressure to dress well, where it could turn into low self- esteem for the child if they believe they are unable to do so [ CITATION Eli12 \l 1033 ]. This behavior, if continued, will have a grave impact on the child’s personality and confidence. Whereas, if uniforms were available, the students will all dress alike, somewhat decreasing the possibility of peer pressure. According to a study “In America, where a majority of schools do not have a uniform, roughly 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students” [ CITATION Spe13 \l 1033 ]. In addition, with decreased peer

pressure, the students are less likely to resist not going to school because of little to no bullying related to clothing.

Although, enforcing school uniforms goes beyond solving the problem of peer pressure, it also aids in the children’s safety. Any unknown outsider within the school vicinity will be easily identifiable, in which they might turn out to be thieves, gang members, and other unwelcome people in some cases. Safety is a top priority in many schools all over the world, where anything that can increase the safety of the children is adopted. School uniforms also prevent the students from being involved in illegal activities like drug use and vandalism. Law enforcement can easily identify students seen committing an act in their uniforms. However, it may be unlikely that the students will do the activities in their uniforms.

In addition, school uniforms create a sense of pride for students that have the privilege of wearing them. Schools appear as a single cooperative organization because of the uniforms, therefore, there is a sense of a healthy community. Parents believe their children will have one less problem to worry about in school, which is what they would wear, and focus more on their studies. The real world is very different from what a child would perceive it as and it is best to prepared for it soon than to never at all. School uniforms help students dress professionally and be hygienic to some extent. There are those students in school who have no care in the world for how they look and they continue to do so because telling them would either mean being rude or abusive. Mandatory school uniforms will help them be better in presenting themselves. It is not a matter of hurting emotions but honesty goes a very long way.

There are debates involving school uniforms in which many oppose it. They believe it is a financial burden because uniforms are costly and some schools tend to change their uniforms slightly in a couple of years. This would mean families with multiple children studying in a

in suppression of self-expression. It is arguable that school uniforms violate The First Amendment of the Constitution but there is no hard evidence to prove this at all. Although there may be some cases where it is violated, it would be in the school’s best interest to keep everything fluid. School uniforms create a professional, safe, and less egocentric environment for its students and whenever a financial issue that may arise is brought up by people who oppose it, they can be shown that the school and state have a policy to deal with the respective situation. Being able to wear a school uniform brings a sense of pride and provides a platform for the students to express themselves further than their appearances.
