Module 08 Case Study - Anxiety Disorder/Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Describe at least three clinical signs of Anxiety observed in the videos.
Lauren was looking down at her hands and biting her nails during most of the video. She was also
moved around a lot, like she couldn’t keep still and was playing with her hair.
She worries about her grandpa every 5 minutes, even though he isn’t sick or old. She has to make
breakfast every morning before 9am or she is uncomfortable for the rest of the day. Her body
shakes and she can’t stop tapping her hands.
Describe at least three Obsessive-Compulsive behaviors observed in the videos.
Lauren has to fold the laundry a certain way, and if her mom tries to help she must refold it all
again.
When she was younger she would count the cars on the street to see if both sides had the same
number. If the number was uneven, she would have her parents drive down the street again so she
could recount the cars. They needed to be equal.
She would count the number of students in her Spanish class each day, and there had to be 17
students including herself, no more or less.
Explain at least three therapeutic communication techniques used by the nurse in the
videos.
Active Listening- The nurse would stay silent, so that Lauren could take her time and decide what
she wanted to say or how she wanted to say it.
Clarify/Explore – By asking questions and repeating things Lauren would said, she was showing
Lauren that she was interested in helping her and making sure that she understood what was being
said.
Questions/Summarizing – Using open ended questions allowed Lauren to tell the nurse how she
felt about her behaviors and rituals. Summarizing parts of the interview helped the nurse to confirm
she understood what Lauren was trying to say.
