Middle Ages: sometimes called the dark ages - everything was about god; not particular exciting time to live, war, not clean, women were secondary to men

Women 500-1400: women were very hidden unless mother decided to teach them, only way they could get educated was being turned over to the church

Hildagard - Turned over to church at 10 - She wrote the first morality play (show that used predominantly women, show that showed virtues, chastity) - Wrote books on plants, herbal things, medic, mystic - Had visions from god - Some thought she was crazy; connected with the devil - Had to get permission from the church to speak her mind - One of the first musicians that we know of

Why do we not know of many musicians from middle ages? - Because music was kept by the church (birth, wedding - everything was kept by the church) - It was so early that we do not have anything noted or written from music then

Music was mostly one line; singing gregorian chant, hollow sounding - not much harmony, no time signature, could not feel flow of the song, cannot hear much of a melody

The church, synagogue - talks about it being a place of gender segreation Synagogue says women were seen as a distraction Church woman - able to sing but not with group in mass; were in the “office”

400-600: the renaissance : new birth or rebirth - Like a light bulb got turned on - Women wear bright colors - Art was on walls - not just got - People began to travel - Everything became alive - The birth of secular music: anything other than god (lvoe song, song about life, etc) - Started to think ab humanism (think ab ourselves, how we relate to others) - Feelings - Psychology, sociology, literature, arts, treasures - Nobody cared about self before this period - Write music for US - Good time to live in

Nobility, kings, queens, poor townspeople (no middle class

Haves and have nots

Kings and the queens: would entertain in court; open theater. Hire people from town, many beig woman, to come up and entertain (courtizen)

courizen : women being hired to come out sing dance and entertain royalty - good job could get educated when came out, in music and in all forms - Double edged meaning: higher ups would be jealous - Sing dance chat - Royal woman did not like it, would call them sirens - The little mermaid was considered a siren (half animal half human) derogatory term, morally suspect - Woman would come out and put on a show for the men they loved - Usually called nasty terms - Woman would play proper instruments (could not play instruments that would distort face too much, or cello (spread legs) - Often be accompany by trupadoors

Trupadoors: men that would be hired by less noble worth - Sing dance with courtizens - Sometimes royal woman would fall in love with them called: trubareets

Trubareets: one of the most popular ones wrote song, she was the countis of dea - Song of love, meaning “why dont you love me”

Maddalena casulana: singer and referred to as siren - Hired by wealthy family - Bc they had money she had access to publication - She was able to get her music published which was why we remember her - Teacher of composition - One of the first printed works by a woman

Small womans choir: concerto delle donne First womans group was founded by duke afonso d’este - Within 10 years of him finding this every italian court created one

Musicology: what was happenign with people during this time

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Review Renaissance: rebirth, humanism, humanity, not all about god, think about how we related to each other, travel, world opens up

● They wanted music to be very emotional–change in tempo, dynamics, more than one mood per piece ● Most important thing: the use of ornamentation: instead of singing a note, there are all types of trills and frills around every note; very overdone ● Music is becoming flushed out, more horns and instruments

  • A lot of women who have fathers or brothers or husbands in music world, starting to see more names
  • Is being musically inclines nature or nurture? Both, practice makes perfect and sometimes you are predisposed to doing it
  • A time of scientific discovery ● Some started during renaissance period but gets expanded now here
  • Center of the baroque era is in florence
  • Women could make money in this period by playing as a court musician
  • Period of aesthetics, what looks beautiful and is pleasing to the senses
  • Piano was not invented yet, the harpsichord was here
  • On harpsichord string is plucked, chime like very light, not much dynamics; piano string was struck with a hammer–different tonality

Women in baroque period Franscesca Caccini - Both of her parents were court musicicans - She leared the harpe, loom, harpsichord, and sang - Really known for singing - One of the first women to tour - Henry the fourth saw her and secured her services, so he played for king family the fourth - Medici family responded and took her away and signed her away to their family - Composed music, taught music - Wrote 100s of pieces of music, only small amount survived today - One of the first women to perform in oparah - One ofn the highest paid court musicinas for that time

  • Suggesting the court may have been somewaht gender neutral at this time (dont know)
  • Despite the ban on woman singing in the church, she was able to sing for the pope
  • She had an arranged marriage
  • She had a dowry, education, very well taken care of woman
  • She wrote a song called “maria, dolce maria”

Barbara Strozzi - Raised by her father, back then if parets separated they would have to go with their father - Father was wealthy and in publishing industry - Part of a group called the academy - The academy was a group of men who gtot together who talked together about politics literature and other popular topics - Father would have these wealthy men and would ask his daughter barbara to sit in and entertain them - She had several children with one of the men in the group - Controversy whether her father used her sexually with these men - People called her a siren - She wrote 8 volumes of music - Music was printed, bc her father was in printing industry - One of the most published composers in the baroque era

Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre → most in florence in baroque period, but she is in france - She ended up working for louie the 14th - Versailles - He had 200 musicians at a time - And the music was for chapel, religious services, chamber groups, outdoor/indoor events, military events, parties, mostly anything - Born into a lower class, but musical family - Her family built harpsichords - Published her first book of music at age 20
