Go to each link and review it. Tell me what it was about and what you learned from it. This is the recommended format for the entire course! If you do not write about what is in the link, I will not know if you went to it and learned from it. The critiques do not have to be super long, but they need to demonstrate that you did the work.

After you have done this, then you are to write an essay. Here are recommended guidelines for things you may wish to address: I want you to write your own thoughts and really do some in-depth thinking. Remember, this is a "show what you know and do" class, so show me good thinking and hard work in order to earn the highest marks.

Summary: “The term ‘mental health’ implies the absence of illness or disorder. But there are a lot of ways people can be mentally healthy or ill, just like there are many ways to be physically healthy or unwell. Both mental health and mental illness are states of being that are on a spectrum” This quote that I had highlighted above discerns the differences in the actual understanding of mental health & mental illness. It has been our society that lacks education or its due diligence that can create misunderstandings to differentiate the two mental related topics. With that being said many people can become discouraged to seek help in regards to the misconception of mental health and mental illness, which really harms those who are actually battling mental issues that can be properly treated if they only knew the true definition of

these terms. The U. actually suffers from mental illness more than we think it has been dealing with. Another important key part of this informative article brought to light that poor medical literacy can play a huge factor in actual problems with mental health stigma. The end result of this article was more education, better understanding; this conveyed the message of how medical institutions and public health organizations are able to contribute to the betterment of mental health and mental illness.

American Public Health Association. Mental health as a public health issue. apha/topics-and-issues/mental-health

Summary: The video provided through this url Why is mental health a public health issue? broke down the definition of health in the first place to have a better understanding of the word and its relevance to the mental spectrum that is used to be defined when talking about mental health. Mental Illness affects one in five adults in the US in any given year; Mental Illness can be visible in many degrees like depression or bipolar disorder. “Mental illness isn’t just mental, though-it can impact our physical health too” which shows the importance of seeking treatment and the seriousness of mental illness being portrayed to be connected with other health conditions or even critical diseases. Stressors from Mental Health can impact not only the individual, but who or what that individual surrounds them self with: (Poverty, Neighborhood violence, or even climate change). Mental Health is more than just a hashtag movement, it is a pandemic that labels it to be a public health concern and critical issue that needs to be dealt with.

Youth mental health got worse during the pandemic cdc/media/releases/2022/p0331-youth-mental-health-covid-19.html

Summary: The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have brought forth the issues that Mental Illness has been impacting the youth of our society during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The CDC reported “According to the new data, in 2021, more than a third (37%) of high school students reported they experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 44% reported they persistently felt sad or hopeless during the past year.” This is abnormal to the previous years of data value to the average high school students in the U. to be experimenting, now not only is the COVID- pandemic has inflamed this situation, though it has resulted in several ways to negatively impact the lives of many students in mental states that can be hard to recover from. The data provided in the article is a cry for help, an SOS to those who are suffering from severe and acute mental health issues at home. Emotional abuse, physical abuse, attempted suicide rates and etc. have been a result of the pandemics. Also, the fact that it Mental Health problems have also insulated other health problems like the use of illicit drugs, sexual abuse, and high risks of violent behaviors. This revolves around the fact that school/education can be a safe house to these students because it can provide the help or the needed intervention in these youth’s lives.

Summary: This article was very fascinating in regards to Public Health is Mental Health. The author of this article, Dr. Sandro Galea brought a lot of great points to the table to discuss on Mental Health being determined by the way we choose to live our lives which has determinants that impacts the results of one’s well being. A statement that resonated with me as I was reading this article was “Clearly, mental illness is not just a challenge for individuals, but for populations. Yet we tend to think of mental health as a personal matter, something to be faced alone or with a therapist, rather than as a matter of public health. This needs to change.” Putting emphasis on the fact that mental illness is not a challenge just for individuals, but for margins of a people, communities to be exact. Having to express that we are not taking care of those who are actually battling for their lives with mental disorders and can not receive the proper help that some may be seeking, because not everyone is aware and informed that there is help.
