  1. What is Xango Juice?

Xango Juice is made from the rind of the mangosteen plant, having helped with many health problems and diseases. This plant is found in South-East Asia and has been used for centuries. The active ingredient is xanthene, found within the rind. Along with being a great antioxidant, it also has anti inflammatory effects. It is bitter to the taste however, when these ingredients are mixed with the right fruits it becomes sweet and tasty. It is only sold through the distributor and cost members $30 a bottle, nonmembers is $35. Despite numerous miracle like testimony’s, it is not intended as a medical treatment. It is not regulated by the FDA and has yet to be tested on humans, only animals.

  1. List some information about the main characters. What information does each provide in the scenario?

  1. Design an experiment to test one of the claims

Hypothesis: Using 5oz of Xango juice a day will treat terminally ill cancer patients. Experimental Design: Single Blind Study. Over a span of 6 months there will be a controlled (placebo) group and the experimental group (receives 5oz of Xango). Groups: 60 participants total, 30 per group. Expected Results: Alleviates symptoms (muscle pain, joint pain & fatigue) of the cancer in patients who drank Xango. Conclusion: The patients who consumed Xango would have relief from their cancer pain over the 6 month time period.

  1. Identify some logical errors/ logical fallacies made by some of the characters.

“The mangosteen plant had been used for centuries” - Appeal to Tradition.

“Were approaching a billion dollars in sales”- Appeal to the Masses

The whole premise is based on genetic fallacy

Ann & Davids enthusiasm to sell this product, without being experts. -Appeal to Authority

  1. Analyze the scenario using FiLCHeRS- do the claims made by Xango Juice pass or fail?

F- Fail, it has not been tested.

L- Fail, product success depends on how popular it is, not it’s success.

C- Fail, it does not consider any of third variable problems.

H- The testimonies are all bias, of course you want to believe it works.

R- Fail, is hard to replicate studies that haven’t been controlled or even done yet.

S- Fail, Not sufficient, because there is no proof.

  1. What is the role of the FDA? To make sure the products we buy are safe and effective.

  2. What is the Dietary Supplements Health Education Act? It allows anything that is marketed as a “supplement” to avoid being tested by the FDA before being marketed to the consumer.

  3. What would you want people to know about Health Supplements? Health supplements have many great testimonies but in my opinion is a waste of money. Our body produces what we need mostly and despite my criticism, if it seems to help relieve pain from someone then why not use it.

  4. Would this be a product that you would try or recommend to a friend or family member? Explain I would certainly try this product! With all of the positive testimonies it seems like it couldn’t hurt me. Depending on how I felt while consuming the juice I might recommend it however I am reluctant to do so. I wouldn’t want someone to ignore real medical conditions because of the effect they think supplements are having.
