ShadowHealth Case: Bipolar Disorder: Lucas Callahan

This case provides a fairly realistic representation of a client experiencing a manic episode.

8am-9am: Pre-brief

Questions for Pre-brief:

 Did you do your self care activity from last week?

 How are you feeling about the simulation activity planned for today?

 What questions or concerns do you have about the simulation?

 Do you have any thoughts about working with an individual who is much younger and possibly more relatable than our previous virtual clients?

 What is one area of learning you hope to focus on today through the simulation?

9 am – 12:30am: Work on ShadowHealth Bipolar Disorder Case

Be certain to review the objectives related to the simulation before you start.

Plan to go through the case at least twice. Consider the following when completing the case:

 What do you notice about the client’s speech and his responses as well as his overall behavior during the interview?

 What feelings did you experience as you were completing Lucas Callahan’s assessment?

 Was your approach different due to his responses?

Think about the domains of assessment. Note what you assess with Lucas Callahan in relation to cognitive, affective (emotional), behavioral and physiological symptoms of depression. Record one intervention for use with him in each of the four domains.

Which symptoms would be a priority for intervention?

Was this client’s presentation similar to what you would expect to see in someone experiencing mania? Compare his presentation to your experiences in the clinical setting with individuals experiencing mania.

What was your experience like in trying to educate and empathize with Lucas Callahan vs. with your prior virtual clients experiencing depression and anxiety? How was this experience different?

12:30pm to 2:30pm: De-brief.

We will discuss the case specifically and interventions for working with individuals experiencing mania. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about assessment and share any challenges you experienced in completing the case.

We will also discuss challenges in assessment with a client experiencing mania.

We will do role play to practice skills assessing and working with a client diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder experiencing mania.

We will end our time together discussing plans for self care.
