The Government of Colorado is the governmental constitution as determined by the Constitution of the State of Colorado. It comprises three divisions: the executive division headed by the Governor, the legislative division consisting of the General Assembly, and the division containing the Supreme Court and lower courts. The distribution of powers among state governments' primary policymaking branches does not restrain legislatures and governors' aptitudes from achieving their idiosyncratic purposes; instead, it introduces systematic directional biases into state policy (Daniel et al., 2015).

The General Assembly is a bicameral and consists of The State Senate with 35 senators serving four-year periods, and The House of Representatives comprises 65 members. Senators are elected for a four-year term, and House Representatives are elected for two-year term. The President of the Senate and the House of Representatives' Speaker, along with the Majority and Minority Leaders of each house, serve as the Legislature's primary leadership. These members are responsible for the House and Senate's day-to-day operations and serve as the oversight authority for the legislative service groups (Colorado General Assembly, n.).

The Colorado General Assembly discussed proposals during the legislative session and presented them in a written document called a bill. A bill introduces a new law. The process of passing a bill consists of several series of votes and hearings. Passing of a bill requires a majority: 18 votes in the Senate and 33 votes in the House of Representatives. If both chambers adopt a bill, it moves to be signed by the Governor. The Governor’s signature on the bill makes it law, the bill can become law without his approval, or he vetoes the bill.

Colorado State Governor

The current Governor of Colorado is Jared Polis, elected in 2018. Before becoming Governor, Jared Polis was Colorado's 2nd Congressional District representative in the U. House of Representatives from 2009. The Governor of Colorado is an elected constitutional official, the chief of Colorado's highest executive state office. The Governor serves four years and is limited to two consecutive terms. This study conducted by Daniel et al. in 2015 concludes that state spending hierarchy is defined partially by the two primary branches of Legislature responsible for setting state policies and the Governor. Administrative features that promote the Legislature and the Governor's power ensure their ability to better achieve their policy agenda (Daniel et al., 2015).

U. Senator for Colorado Michael Bennet is the U. Senate Committee member on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and focuses on improving the health care system responsiveness to the U. population's needs. The senator supports the idea that every American should have coverage with an inexpensive, quality health care plan. To achieve this, he is pushing to expedite the progress made under the Affordable Care Act, stating "too many Coloradans have had to make choices about health care that no one else in the industrialized world has had to make. This is unacceptable" (Michael Bennet. U. Senator for Colorado, n.). The senator is working to reduce costs, address rural communities' needs, energize research and innovation.

U. House of Representatives from Colorado Diana DeGette represents the people of Colorado's First Congressional District. DeGette oversees the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration. She is a leading advocate for the Equal Pay Act to help women receive equal pay for equal work.
