CHAPTER17 Key Terms
PROKARYOTE
A (typically) unicellular organism whose cell lacks internal membrane-bound organelles and whose DNA
is not contained within a nucleus.
BACTERIA
One of the two domains of prokaryotic life; the other is Archaea.
FLAGELLA (SINGULAR: FLAGELLUM)
Whiplike appendages extending from some cells, used in movement of the cell.
PILI (SINGULAR: PILUS)
Short, hairlike appendages extending from the surface of some bacteria that enable them to adhere to
surfaces.
CAPSULE
A sticky coating surrounding some bacterial cells that adheres to surfaces.
SYMBIOSIS
A relationship in which two different organisms live together, often interdependently.
PATHOGEN
A disease-causing agent or organism.
ARCHAEA
One of the two domains of prokaryotic life; the other is Bacteria.
