general topics that accommodate the first year experience informed by empirical research. Topics covered

throughout the course will prepare each student to navigate the diversity of campus resources, connect with

peers, develop personal academic goals, get involved, and explore our community. The course revolves around UWM’s P.R.I.D. Message. The goal of Pathways to Success is to establish and build a solid foundation

on campus to successfully achieve your academic goals. As part of the partnership with Math 094 students will

receive assignments and learn skills that will lead to increased success in Math 094. These skills will also be

transferrable to classes and campus life beyond Math 094.

Course Objectives:

contribution to the class both face-to-face and online. Attendance is a class requirement and part of your final

grade. Inappropriate classroom behaviors include a lack of participation or disruption of class this includes:

sleeping, text messaging, inattention, or otherwise disrespectful behavior.

Being engaged in coursework through regular participation in classroom and D2L discussion is essential to succeeding in this course and throughout your college coursework. All interactions in class (face-to-face and online) are expected to be courteous and respectful of others’ viewpoints. Various voices being heard in the classroom provides for a much richer educational experience.

Absence Policy: If you are going to miss class for any reason it is your responsibility to communicate with your instructor as

soon as possible. Students are allowed 2 excused absences (5 point contribution grade deduction for the day

of the excused absence). Unexcused or more than 2 excused absences will result in a deduction of your

contribution grade (10 point contribution grade deduction for each day).

Your contribution is worth 10% if your overall final grade. At the end of the semester, you will sit down with the instructor and talk about your contribution over the course of the semester. You will be able to share how

many points you feel that you have earned and how you have earned those points. The instructor will take this

into consideration, and determine your final participation grade.

Technology Policy:

Upon the beginning of class all cell phones, laptops, and any other electronic device should be stored away. If a student is to have an electronic device out during class they will lose their participation points for that day.

Students who need lectures recorded need to speak with the instructor prior to class to communicate how

they will be recording or note taking the course content, and must obtain written permission before doing so.

What’s something you really hope to learn in this class?

ALEKS Screenshot Log into your ALEKS account. Complete your initial assessment. After the initial assessment, click the My Pie button to return to the page where you can see how much of your pie needs to be completed. Be sure you can see your whole pie and not just the objective pie (there should be more than two colors). When you can see your pie, (on a Windows Computer) hold down the Control (bottom left) button while pressing the Print Screen (top right) button at the same time. You can then paste this picture into a word document by simultaneously holding down the CTRL Button and the letter V, or right clicking and choosing the paste option. To print your screen from a Mac, you should simultaneously hold down the Command, Control, Shift, and 3 buttons. To paste, you can press Command and V keys or you can hold command while right-clicking with the mouse and choosing the paste button. This screenshot should be submitted to your e-portfolio on D2L.

Stress Management A stress management inventory will be online with a link provided on the D2L site. Using the results from the inventory, write a ½-page reflection about ways you can improve your stress and/or overall wellness. Reflection due to Dropbox.

These pictures should be posted online in your ePortfolio. A D2L Scavenger hunt will be completed as well to assist students get acquainted with using hybrid learning by exploring our class site. Directions for each will be provided in class.

Bring Math Notes to Class Bring your math notes notebook to class.

How to Succeed in College Find an article online or YouTube video that talks about ways to succeed in college. Post the link to that article or video with a short summary (50 words) and 100+ words talking about what you’ve learned from the article/video in the D2L discussion titled “How to Succeed in College”. Then, respond to articles/videos posted by 3 other student. You must respond to three people who posted different articles. Be read or watch their media and comment on the original article/video as well as the students’ comments. All comments should be value-added meaning that you should pose questions or answer others’ questions as well in introducing new thoughts or ideas.

Bring in All Syllabi: Bring all current course syllabi to class with you.

What Motivates You? Post something that motivates you to succeed in college to your D2L ePortfolio. Also, post a discussion about what motivates you to stay in college. Be sure to respond to 3 other students’ posts in a way that adds value to their discussion. Consider asking follow-up questions, or expanding on something they wrote. Maybe you can find a related article to share with them.

Time Management Calendar: The purpose of this assignment is to work on Time Management Planning skills and organize all of your major assignments for all of your classes in one place, as well as begin to plan for how to accomplish your major assignments.

  1. Have all of the syllabi for all of your classes handy.

  2. Write the deadlines for all of your major assignments, quizzes, midterms, papers, etc. in your academic planner.

  3. Write the deadlines for the major papers, projects, and tests on the Calendars provided in class.

  4. Work backwards from each assignment to make a plan on when and how to begin the assignment.

  5. Example 1. Two weeks before a midterm, I write on my calendar “Review readings for Midterm.” One week before, I write “Review course notes”.

  6. Example 2. Four weeks before a final paper is due, I write on my calendar “Create outline for paper”. Three weeks before, I write “Complete all research”. Two weeks before, I write “Complete rough draft”. One week before, I write “Revise”

  7. Identify times when assignments will cluster up or begin to overlap. Create a plan to manage your time during these busy parts of the semester.

Write 1 page about how the semester looks when you see it all together. When do you see yourself most busy? When will it be less busy? What will your plan be for making it through the busy challenging parts?

The written part of this assignment will be submitted via D2L Dropbox. Calendars will be shown to the instructor during class on the due date.

PERMA Complete the VIA Signature Strengths assessment from authentichappiness. View the related article on D2L and respond the questions in the document. Due to Dropbox.

Time Tracker Activity From Saturday through Thursday, you will keep detailed track of exactly how much time you spend on various activities throughout the day. This will allow you to see how much time you are spending on these activities to determine any changes you may want to make to your schedule. I encourage you to be honest, as well as appropriate with this assignment. Honesty will allow you to better understand yourself and your habits in order to do what you can to improve.

You will also turn in a 1-page paper describing the experience of this activity, what you learned, and any changes you plan on implementing in your schedule.

  1. Which PRIDE letter do you feel could make your first year the most successful?

Topic Presentation Your instructor will assign you a math topic that you have covered over the course of the semester. You are to create a video of you teaching this topic to others. The length of your video should be exactly as long as it takes to properly explain the topic. That being said, your video probably should not be any less than 5 minutes in length. You can draw inspiration from the video lectures you have been watching for your Math 094 course. Directions for creating and uploading your video will be provided on D2L. This video should be posted to both the D2L discussion page and your ePortfolio.

Develop Academic Plan: 1. Choose a major from the following website <www4.uwm/academics/four-year.cfm> and print out the academic plan that accompanies it. 2. Meet with your advisor and develop a first-year plan for how to complete this major. 3.
