TASK 1: Interprofessional Communication and Leadership in Healthcare Reflection Bency Georges College of Health Professions, Western Governors University Janette Garette June 7, 2022 Part One: Working Style

  1. In my personal 5 Dynamics report, I am effortless in two areas Explore and Execute. I am Deliberate in Excite and Deliberate Plus in Examine.

  2. In my Working Style Self-Assessment, my strengths were Examine and Execute. My two challenging are Explore and Excite. Based on my Working Style Self-Assessment, I learn best by implementing a plan using data and completing goal. However, I challenge with developing a plan, find faults and building a team. My 5 Dynamics Assessment indicate I am more dominant in Explore and Execute. My two challenging are Excite and Examine. Based on my 5 Dynamic assessment, I understand the importance of completing the project, hold people accountable and aggressively implement a plan. However , I was challenge with team building and actually developing a plan. In unison these energies show me where I fluctuate in my daily life. I passionate believe that I interchangeable use of all 5 Dynamics on a day to day basis and case by case. A prime example is my hospital has converted to a new EPIC software. My learning style at that moment was to Examine and Excite the software. I wanted to figure it out, follow the rules, encourage others about the software and predict any problems that can arise. However, four weeks later I am transformed to Execute and Explore, I get the job done, develop solutions and strive for completion of charting and documentation.

  3. A working style that I want a teammate to have is opposite of dominate working style I have. I believe that my teammate and I will be a force to reckon with, if all 5 dynamics are found in our group. We can bounce, collaborate thoughts and ideas together. As a result, our projects will be successful and accomplished. Part Two: Communication

  4. A. My best friend wanted to talk to me about her current relationship with her boyfriend. This conversation she mostly talked and I listened. My listening level started out as listening to protect with sincerity and ended as listen to learn with accuracy and authenticity. I, sincerely listened by showing that I empathizing both vocally and internally with my friend. During our conversation I made eye contact and used appropriate body language. I noticed that I supported my friend's conversation and this created a cycle of value through the laws of conversation. In addition, I use Rung 2 (compassion) of the Ladder of listening in this case. B. Observing my listening style, I found that I actively listen. I am attentive to who is speaking, understand what they're saying, reflect on what's being said, and retain the information. Some examples of my active listening are paraphrasing what is being saying to me to show understanding and the using of nonverbal cues. C. I have learned that active listening is an important skill that everyone should master. It helps me build strong relationships. When I listen I mostly on the other person and their needs. Mastering the levels of listening is an art and it requires a great deal of practice.

  5. A. My Father and I were having a conversation about how he wants to spend more time with me, how much he missed his grandbabies and I should call him more. In this situation, I spoke with pretense and sincerity. An example of this is, my response to my father was very firm and defensive because I felt he was lying or making promises he can not keep. As my father , you

  6. My new communication tools I will use are attentiveness, engagement, body language and addressing problems with a gentle approach. When I engage in a conversation with someone, I will use good listening skills, effective body language, have eye contact, ask questions, and show that I am interested in the conversation. These communication tools will add value and result in alignment based on the value cycle. The use of these tools increases alignment, strengthens relationships, improves learning, and increases value. Part Three: Reflection/Hero’s Journey

  7. A. The course has provide a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses in areas where I need to spend more time and energy on. Since taking this course, I learn about listening skills and improving my communication skills. I understand the importance of accurate and authentic communication. Through the course materials, I learned how to interpret body language in my professional life and how to use non-verbal communication. B: The most challenging part for me in this course is learning how to use good communication tools and understanding the laws of conversation. C: Honestly, practicing mindfulness was one of the most valuable parts in the course and live sessions. In addition, I learn how to recognize, manage, and regulate my emotions through practices of mindfulness. An example is when I encounter a difficult situation at work with a nurse, I initially remain calm and be mindful. I try to make the situation better while remaining calm. There are many other examples where I have not practiced mindfulness and reacted horrible to other coworkers in my department. This energy weighed me down mentally. I practice more mindfulness techniques now since I took this course and remain calm during adverse events.

  8. Two ways I can help friends, family and others learn what I learned within this course is by demonstrating the practices of mindfulness and effective communication. I would show them how taking a few minutes to decompress, gather their thoughts or even taking a break by taking a 15 minute walk can help them decrease their stress, increase mindfulness, and help with depression. I would show my friends, family and others effective communication by bringing my knowledge that I obtain in this class. I would even supply them with information from the Internet if needed, showing them how to communicate better in their everyday life.

  9. I plan to sustain and maintain the positive skills and habits that I have formed in this course with discipline. I will continuously use mindfulness by doing breathing methods and walking for 15 to 30 minutes at work during break. To sustain effective communication, I will continue to remind myself to consider how the other person feels, maintain eye contact, listen, maintain a welcoming tone of voice, and show interest in the conversation.

  10. The area of communication and leadership I can still develop in is speaking clearly and take accountability for my feelings, sympathize with others, motivate others, and find the connection of my own and others' needs, purposes, and concerns. Secondly, some areas I can develop are my authenticity and being a good listener. My plans to develop those area is to continue learning nonstop, have an open mind, study communication, master self awareness and mindfulness.
