I'm having so much trouble just trying to breathe. And I've had these terrible
coughing fits. A few days ago, a bronchospasm. My health is going downhill fast.

could get something to help me.

I feel exhausted. I'm just so weak now, that even walking up the stairs feels exhausting. I had this awful
coughing fit three days ago. But I've had trouble breathing for several months now. I've also been
coughing up some nasty phlegm.

I'm coughing up a lot of gunk these days. I cough up sputum just about every time I cough. (Clarified to

This nasty stuff I'm hacking up when I cough... mostly it's clear. Sometimes it's yellow, or gray, or this
dark color. I've never seen any blood in it. It's kind of... thick. It's been that way for about two weeks.
Any aggravating factors
Honestly, smoking makes my breathing worse. I have these terrible coughing fits afterwards. Kind of a
no-brainer, but I can't help myself. I can't handle the withdrawal, so I just try to hold out between
cigarettes as long as I can.

Nothing seems to make my symptoms feel better -- not even my inhaler. I know for sure that smoking
makes it worse. I try to hold off as long as I can between cigs. But still... I think if I quit I'd feel better.

I have difficulty breathing all day, every day. It's been like that for months. Had a bad bronchospasm a

Breathing is so hard, all the time. I guess I'd put it at a 6 out of 10.
How does your health affect your social life
My breathing problems sure aren't helping my social life any. I was never exactly a social butterfly, but
now I'm not up to going out. Even normal things--shopping, picking up my meds.

I don't have any allergies, never had an allergic reaction... nothing like that.
Do you use home oxygen
I don't use oxygen... it could probably help me. But I'd blow myself up, smoking near it.
Therapy could help relieve some of your symptoms of breathlessness and fatigue. YOu can not use
oxygen therapy if you smoke, It is dangerous and can cause a fire outbreak. WHen you quit smoking,
you can seek oxygen therapy.
That's good to know.
Have you had any vaccines
I've had vaccines before, but... it's been a long time.
Your age and with your health condition it is important to get an annual flu vaccine and that you also
receive the pneumococcal vaccine every 5-10 years. Both infections would have terrible effect on your
health because your restaurant system is already compromised.

I live with my daughter, Ava. I moved in when my health started getting worse. She takes care of me.

I started smoking when I was 15. I've smoked for a long time. Had a little success quitting. I stopped
for ten years when my daughter was born. But, I picked up the habit again. I've tried quitting since my
husband died, but... it's hard.

How many cigarettes do you smoke a day
Typically I smoke between three and five cigarettes a day. It's been that way for the last four months.
Ever since I relapsed. Smoking makes my breathing worse, so... I try to hold off as long as I can
between cigarettes.
Really important that you quit smoking as soon as possible so you can get some relief from COPD.
Smoking is putting your life in danger and making your symptoms worse I can point you to what's
community health or smoking cessation programs that can help support you while you are quitting.

Do you exercise
I can't exercise. I can't even move around the house without feeling fatigued and out of breath.
Exerting myself in any way makes me feel worse.
Tell me about your diet
Well, I'm too weak to cook. I eat microwavable meals if I'm alone. Pasta, pizza, rice, all that. My
daughter cooks nice food... quinoa, salads, salmon.
When you're no more having COPD symptoms, it is important to eat well and get some light exercise.
Not exercising can exacerbate your symptoms and exercise will help make you feel better.

Brief history of illness
I have COPD -- chronic bronchitis. I was diagnosed with Group B years ago.
Family history of illness
My parents died from smoking their whole lives. It was a different time... my father had a heart attack
at 42. My mother edged him out, but she eventually got pneumonia.

I wheeze when I cough, I wheeze when I breathe. I wheeze.
Sound like
It's mostly this deep wheezing in my chest. It's like a crackling.
Do you have coughing fits
I've had coughing fits in the past, but three days ago I had one that was really severe. I think it was a
bronchospasm. I was afraid of suffocating, and I can't get it out of my mind.
How long do you wait between cigarettes
It's not a set time, but I hold off as long as I can. Maybe two or three hours.
Have you had any ER visit
I went to the hospital two years ago. Bad breathing episode.
Have you had any hospitalization
I was in the hospital for a "respiratory distress episode." They diagnosed me with Group B COPD after
that. I felt like I couldn't breathe... I thought it was the end for me. I was coughing and hacking
something awful. The inhaler they gave me sort of helps, but I feel like it just isn't working.
On any vitamins
I don't take any vitamins or supplements or any of that stuff.
What triggers your smoking
If I start worrying too much about my health... a cigarette usually calms me down. Vicious cycle, I
know. In the last four months I've been smoking three, sometimes as many as five, cigarettes a day.

Have you tried using anything to stop smoking
I've tried quitting a bunch of times -- used gum, patches, lozenges, and nothing stuck. Longest I quit for
was 10 years, when I had my daughter. Started up again when I was 31. Takes so much in you to stay
quit.
Why didn't nicotine replacement therapy work
I've tried those over-the-counter smoking cessation aids before -- gum, lozenges. Even the patch. I
suppose I could try them again, but it was hard to keep up with the schedule. I could never seem to
wean myself off, and eventually I'd just want a cigarette again.

My parents have both passed. My father had a heart attack; my mother, pneumonia. They both
smoked, like me, so... it happens.
How old was your father when he passed away
My dad died of a heart attack. Was only 42. The doctors said it was because of the smoking -- right
side of his heart gave out.
Old was your mother when she passed away
She was 44, I think, or 45.

My husband Derrick was a smoker, too. It killed him. Lung cancer got him about three years back. It
took him quick, at least, but it's not a pretty way to go.

She doesn't smoke probably because her dad died from it. She hates that I smoke. I don't really blame
her.

No, haven't had to deal with that lately.

I won't stop trying to quit, no matter what. I have to make it happen this time.
Side effects include GI symptoms
Kicking the habit will be worth some stomach trouble.
