December 16, 2022, from 2:00-5:00 pm

  1. What is cooperative? Why is Cooperatives Organized? (20pts)

 Cooperatives are businesses owned and con- trolled by the people who use them. Coopera- tives differ from other businesses because they are member owned and operate for the benefit of members, rather than earn profits for investors. Like other businesses, most coopera- tives are incorporated under State law.  Cooperatives allow people to take control of their economic future and, because they are not owned by shareholders, the economic and social benefits of their activity stay in the communities where they are established. Profits generated are either reinvested in the enterprise or returned to the members.

  1. What is the importance of cooperatives in national economic and social development? Elaborate on your answer. (15pts)

 Due to their ability to mobilize savings and money that may be used as inputs in the creation of products and services for the less privileged sections of society, cooperatives have the potential to contribute to rapid economic growth with the correct oversight and support from the government. It also helps the locals in improving the quality of life as well as poverty alleviation. The establishment of multi-purpose cooperatives has played an important role in credit services available to farmers involved in agriculture and easy market access to improve rural living conditions.

  1. How do cooperatives help the agricultural sector? (10pts)

 Farmers and markets are linked by agricultural cooperatives, which also offer a platform for group negotiations with buyers, aggregating, marketing, and processing services, distribution routes for primary products, training, business planning, and capacity building services. Cooperatives also help improve members' returns by buying and selling in bulk and so getting better prices.

  1. From the reading provided in class (Re: Cooperatives in Agriculture: The Case of Top Four Cooperatives in Region IV, Philippines), discuss one cooperative (of your choice) about their journey and story as a cooperative and that cooperative inflicts a change in the community. (20pts)

 PADRE GARCIA MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE

o The cooperative become known as a loan provider at a low interest of 18% per annum. This arouses the interest of the market vendors, tricycle drivers, teachers, employees, and small entrepreneurs to join the cooperative. At that time, the business operation was profitable but did not fare much with other cooperatives because of the limited membership. From a modest beginning in 1981 of having 60 members, initial paid-up capital of P25,000, and a small rented space in the public market, it now had grown as of year 2000, to a size with 1,599 members, capital of more than P25 million, and a beautiful one-storey building on 787 square meter lot in the center of the town of Padre Garcia. All this material achievements were done in a period of about 20 years. The influence of PGMC is already felt in the whole town. Through the effort of the Education and Training Committee and the Board of Directors, the spirit of cooperativism has been instilled in the minds of members and non-members. This resulted into a heavy patronage of the services of the Cooperative. For instance, members no longer borrow from 5/6 system. There is no more “Bombay” lending in Padre Garcia, and non-members make deposits with the Cooperative. 5. Do all cooperatives beneficial to their members or community or not? (10pts)

 The majority of local areas are where cooperatives heaven invest since that is where they are most needed. More funds are allocated to welfare programs like infrastructure, health, education, and many others by investing in these local communities. Additionally, they invest in locally held businesses, which increase their chances of success while competing against larger corporations. It encourages members to launch their businesses and then fund them, assisting the community as a whole by contributing resources like cash and labor. They also provide funding for neighborhood activities like fiestas and gatherings, as long as the attendees are regular, everyday citizens of the neighborhood who will be taking part in the festivities.

  1. Write your learning comprehensively in this subject. (25pts)
