CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Republic Act 9994 defines the privileges all senior citizens in the Philippines are entitled to. Elderly Filipinos aged 60 and above are entitled to a 20% senior citizen discount and are exempted from the value-added tax (VAT) on applicable goods and services for their exclusive use. Is it more fun to be a senior citizen in the Philippines? It may seem so, especially now that the government provides elderly Filipinos with senior citizen discount and benefits to help ease their finances in their golden years, you may be 30 to 40 years away from enjoying such privileges, but it helps to learn about them now, especially if you’re looking after your parents or grandparents. Yes, they need your help in knowing and asserting their rights under the senior citizen law. Thus we all know how beneficial to the Elderly the VAT and 20% senior citizen discount which also known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010”

Statement of the Problem

This study explores the view of the students whose parents or grandparents are Senior Citizens. What benefits does it bring on knowing the rights under the senior citizen law?

Assumptions

The researcher assumes that the respondents view senior citizen law as if nothing.

Importance of the Study

This study will mostly benefit the following:

 The Senior High Students will benefit for a secured future...  The Elderly will know their rights as a senior citizen...

Scope and Delimitation

The respondents of the study are residents from Mabayuan, Olongapo City. The study will be conducted from month of March 2021 until the end of the School year. Residents who refused to be interviewed are not considered respondents of the study

Definition of Terms

TAX - a compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income and business profits, or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions.

VAT - A value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain, from production to the point of sale.

DISCOUNT - a deduction from the usual cost of something, typically given for prompt or advance payment or to a special category of buyers.

THE REPUBLIC ACT 9994 –An ACT granting additional benefits and privileges to senior citizens

This research analyzes the impact of quality of life as a meta-variable that conditions the health and social welfare of the elderly. The sample of this study is composed of 500 people, randomly selected from the major day centers for the elderly in the province of Granada (Spain), which is a multidimensional scale of health and quality of life, along with the Katz and García measure questionnaires, which are also applied to quality of life. The importance of implementing health measures from a multidimensional perspective. This means that while analyzing the quality of life, factors such as the various social conditions and social, cultural, and psychological networks that exist within.

Filipino senior citizens had a deep understanding of their unmet needs .Four types of unmet needs emerged, which revolved around economic, health care, social services, and family support. Then, we explored their coping mechanisms to overcome these unmet needs. Senior citizens responded either positively or negatively to cope with the challenges associated with aging. As shown in the results, senior citizens of this study had an unmet need for financial security, mainly due to the high rates of the informal workforce and the vicious cycle of poverty. They were not able to save for their pension as they had to consider their families’ expenses over their own needs.
