CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

An online game is a video game played partly or primarily on the Internet or on any available computer network. Online gaming design can range from simple text - based environments to complex graphics and virtual worlds. Internet games for the home computer can be games offered online, particularly those that are made available for free. Online gaming is one of the widely used leisure activities by many people. For some people it is said that playing video games has a number of reasons to be played, for it can be a stress reliever, challenge and competition, relaxation, enjoyment, social interaction, and even mentally escaping from the real world. For most people, on-line gaming is one of the best past time that they acquire specially for teenagers, youngsters and students. in some ways, especially, when they won the game. Fourth, they can earn money while playing it like by joining tournament or competition. Fifth, this game improves the brain's speed because while playing this game, the brain receives visual and audial stimulations, and according to research, individuals who play online games frequently, can process visual and audial stimulators faster than others. Lastly, it enhances multitasking skills because this game requires you to move your joystick or keys while looking at the screen, and in this game player, needs to observe and react at the same time, too.

Hence, Mobile Legends is a beneficial game. However, everyone needs to play them in

moderation because its negative effects will be discussed further on this research.

while playing Mobile Legends?

Hypotheses The following is a hypothesis that has been derived from the stated objectives: “There is significant relationship between demographic factors such as playing Mobile Legends towards the study habits of the ICT students in Our Lady of Lourdes College."

as a new. Therefore, video games can no longer be seen as mere entertainment tools. As Games have become a tool to communicate, teach, and influence attitudes and behaviour, numerous studies have suggested that they have positive effects on problem solving, achievement as well as creating interest and commitment in learning.

Computer games have become one of the most important entertainment tools for children, teenagers and even adults all around the globe. Allowing access to the virtual world with unlimited possibilities, computer games compulsively attract many people. In fact, they have become an integral part of human society. In other words, by providing virtual fun and entertaining environments (Demirbileka & lema Tamer, 2010), and having characteristics such as being interesting and exciting, computer games stimulate motivation and create a sense of enjoyment of learning.

Kershner (2020), according to his research an individual can improve their eye and hand coordination skill from online games, especially from Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). Through these games, can be won through strategic planning, selective attention, sensorimotor skills, and teamwork place considerable demands on the brain. The study revealed that the players of these games have faster information processing, allocate more cognitive power to individual visual stimuli, and allocate limited cognitive resources between successive stimuli more effectively through time.

Scott (2020), he stated that online games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can also can be played for stress relief. Some students who play this game are just having fun. It also

brought excitement to students. The game like this can be used as a coping tool after exposure to stressful situations just like having a load of academic activities.

According to Tumbokon (2020), academic achievement may be negatively related to the over-all time spent playing video games. The study found out that student online game addicts argue a lot with their teachers, fight a lot with their friends, and their grade is lower than the students who play the online game less often. Some students admitted that used to skip their homework just to play the game.

Impulsivity of MOBA Gamers According to Filip Nuyens from Belgium (2015), it states that according to their experiments, using a large sample of adolescents indentified heightened trait impulsivility to act as a risk factor for developing subsequent problematic patterns of video game use. Moreover, it states that some experimental studies have demonstrated that problematic online gaming is characterized by impaired executive control, disadvantageous decision making and compromised delay discounting.

The Effect of MOBA Games on Adolescents' Psychological Health According to Anhwen He (2017), their hypothesis suggest that adolescents who mainly play MOBA games and shows a certain degree of addiction to MOBA games are more likely to have psychological problems than adolescents who mainly plays other genres of video games with proximately same level of addiction.

gender identity that the findings of her research indicate that many forms of mass media are contributing to the on-going gender imbalances in our society.

Local Studies According to Bautista (2019), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can actually help the players to improve different skills that can be used in real life situations. Strategic thinking, critical thinking, and multitasking skills are the best examples of the skills that can be developed and nurtured while playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Achieving the victory is the primary objective of this game. Preparing a good plan design using the ideas in your head can really be a good help to achieve it. Together with teammates connected by a server, the game also promotes teamwork and social connectivity.

According to Jana (2020), online games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang helps the students to improve their problem-solving skills. It has a strategy that must be recognized by the player to win a game. It enables their mind to be more active and it helps them to come up with decisions in tight situations. In many cases there is a time pressure, which develops speed and decision making skill. Studies have shown that playing online game such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can also increase the student creativity.

In addition Garcia (2020), found out that the student to who became addicted to Mobile Legends: Bang Bang may end up having a poor academic performance. When students dedicate much time to play this, they tend to forget to do their school activities. This will lead them to have a low grade and sometimes a failing grade. Moreover, a student can tend to suffer from

worsening learning ability and concentration problems

According to Dumrique & Castillo (2019) students' learning takes place unexpectedly, but the inappropriate usage of playing online games also leads to some problems such as being distracted in school. The studies revealed that the human brain is easy to destruct. Therefore, playing this game can bring a huge impact on the student academic performance.

The studies concerning the effects of online game specifically Mobile Legends: Bang Bang to the academic performance of the students are contradictory because some of them suggest that online games may lead to negative effects while others said that it gives positive benefits. The relationship between the usage of online game and academic performance has no definitive answer to the question of whether online game disrupts academic performance. The objective of this study is to determine how Mobile Legends: Bang Bang affects the students' intellectual capacity in relation to their academic performance.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research locale, population and sample, research instrument, data gathering procedures and statistical treatment of data utilized by the researchers to collect and analyze the necessary data in the course of the research study. The most appropriate method was used to enable the researchers to come up with the accurate and needed information.

Research Design Researchers used the qualitative, descriptive and correlational design under quantitative method of research to determine the effects and relationship between playing online games to the academic performance of Grade 11 and Grade 12 ICT students of Our Lady of Lourdes College.

Locale of the Study The researcher conducted the survey to the Grade 11 students of Our Lady of Lourdes College. This school was built at 1986, Founder by Mr. And Dr. Alfredo Demitillo. This place was selected for knowing the efficacy of the said study among Grade 11 and Grade 12 students. There are student that are most likely to respond effectively in the study and would be able to help them gather the needed data for this research, because respondents may feel more comfortable in giving an information to people who they aware where from.

distributed the questionnaires to the respondents. They discussed the contents of the questionnaires to the respondents before answering. In distributing the questionnaires, they use the allotted time so that class discussion will not be disturbed. The students were given enough time in answering the questionnaires. Lastly, the researchers gather the information that they get from the respondents. In addition, the answer of the respondents will be confidential and only the researchers will know about it.
