-Ukraine is a matter of strategic importance to Russia
-territorial conflicts
-Russia is in control of Crimea
-Ukraine was a part of Soviet Union
-Ukraine shares borders with the European union and Russia
-as a former soviet republic, Ukraine has a deep social and cultural ties with
Russia.
-The southeastern Ukrainian regions are ethnic Russian population; they are
pro-Russian supporters.
-On April 2010, Viktor Yanukovych (president 2010-2014) signed a landmark
agreement with Russia. Russia agreed to reduce the price of natural gas sold by
Ukraine by 30 percent; in return, Russia wanted Ukraine to extend the lease of
Russian naval base in the black sea for 25 years.
-US always has always had an interest with Ukraine; extended full support/
ensured security and safety for UKR.
-On 1994, US helped Ukraine and Russia come to an agreement
-On 1997, NATO and Ukraine’s partnership was developing.
-Russia was against USA and European union’s interference in Ukraine.
-The US and the Ukrainian public was not in favor of Russia extending its lease of
the naval base in Crimea.
-Viktor changed provisions in the Ukrainian constitution to maintain his power
and presidency. The public did were not in favor; started disliking him. To save
his image, in early 2013, he and his government was in favor of signing the
European Union Association Agreement; the public loved the policy.
-On Nov. 13, they suspended the signing of EUAA; created protests, riots,
movements. The Ukrainian public wanted to remove him from his position.
- On March 2014, Ukraine lost Crimea to Russia.
-Ethnic division in the eastern regions of Ukraine. (Donbas region- Donetsk and
Luhansk).
-Russia gives support on the region; supplied heavy military equipment.
-Russia feels threatened that Ukraine will become a stable state and join the
European Union.
-Ukraine wanted full control of its eastern border before the elections are held
under Ukrainian law.
-Ukraine is currently not in a position to have a full-fledged war against Russia
to reclaim its territory; it definitely needs the help of NATO.
-Ukraine wanted ceasefire and the withdrawal of all Russian troops in the
region; only then, the elections would be held.
