Italian Republic

globaledge.msu/countries/italy/government

Italy Government

Italy is a major country in Southern Europe with a rich history and culture. Italy's government type is a democratic parliamentary republic. This system is like those of Germany or India. Italy is a republic, which means that its head of state is a president and not a monarch. However, the president's powers are limited to symbolic and representative functions. Italy has a parliamentary system, which means that its head of government is a prime minister responsible to the parliament. The prime minister, who heads the Italian government, is a significantly more powerful figure than the president. Finally, Italy is a democratic republic, meaning that the government authorities originate from free and fair elections held under universal suffrage.

Three Branches of the Italy Government

System?

As in any democracy, the Italy government system is composed of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The judicial branch is separate and independent from other branches. However, there is no true separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches because the executive is elected by and responsible to the legislative branch.
