2.3 Site work 2.3.1 Formwork Formwork is a rectangular or other polygonal mold of steel or timber that used to give the required shape for fresh concrete. Formwork is generally used for molding and supporting the fresh concrete is used in a structure on slab, beam, and column and on the stair case. Doka offers a wide range of proven wall formwork systems for all jobsite situations, all fields of use, and all specifications regarding the concrete.

plane stiffness’s are placed at certain convenient and strategic locations, often they can be economically used to provide the needed resistance to horizontal loads. Such walls, called shear walls, are in effect deep vertical cantilever beams that provide lateral stability to structures by resisting the in-plane shears and bending moments caused by the lateral forces.

2.3.1 Surveying

Surveying: -is defined as a science and an art of making measurements of the relative position of natural and man-made features on the earth’s surface and display the information either graphically or numerically.

LEVELLING Levelling is an operation in surveying performed to determine the difference in levels of two points. By this operation the height of a point from a datum, known as elevation, is determined.

Key words

Back sight (B.): It is the first reading taken on the staff after setting up the level usually to determine the height of instrument. Fore sight (F.): It is the last reading from an instrument position on to a staff held at a point. It is thus the last reading taken within a section of levels before shifting the instrument to the next section, and also the last reading taken over the whole series of levels. Intermediate sight (I.): The term ‘intermediate sight’ covers all sightings and consequent staff readings made between back sight and fore sight within each section. Thus, intermediate sight station is neither the change point nor the last point. Reduced level (R.): Reduced level of a point is its height or depth above or below the assumed datum. It is the elevation of the point. Height of instrument (H.) or height of collimation: For any set up of the level, the elevation of the line of sight is the height of instrument.

2.3.1 Punching shear

Punching shear is a type of failure of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to high localized forces. In flat slab structures this occurs at column support points. The failure is due to shear. This type of failure is catastrophic because no visible signs are shown prior to failure. A concentrated load N on a slab causes shearing stresses on a section around the load this effect is referred to as punching shear.

2.3.1 What is concrete?

Concrete is an artificial stone. Its primary properties are:

it is workable before hardening, strong in compression and stays strong for extremely long-time scales. Concrete is a mixture of a binding agent (generally cement) to bond the other materials together: fine aggregate (sand), coarse aggregate (gravel/stones), and water.

INGREDIENTS OF CONCRETE Cement

Cement is a binder, a substance that sets and hardens and can bind other materials together.

Types of Cements

Many types of cements are available in markets with different compositions and for use in different environmental conditions and specialized applications.

Ordinary Portland cement Ordinary Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world.

OPC -it has the following advantages in construction.

 OPC has great resistance to cracking and shrinkage.  The initial setting of OPC is faster than that of PPC.
