D222: Comprehensive Health Assessment

D1. Health Promotion Justification

Recommended health promotion activities for this patient included diet and exercise in

pregnancy. These health promotion activities will benefit both the patient and her developing

fetus. Assessment findings that support the appropriateness of these recommended changes the

patient being overweight and being pregnant.

It is recommended in pregnancy to get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic

exercise per week during pregnancy and the postpartum period per U. Department of Health

and Human Services (2018). The benefits of exercise during pregnancy will aide in reducing the

risk of excessive weight gain, gestational diabetes, and can reduce the risk of postpartum

depression. Frequent moderate exercise can also reduce the risk of developing blood clots and

hypertension in pregnancy. Examples of moderate intensity excerise are brisk walking, yoga,

water aerobics and bike riding. All types of exercise should be disccused with a patients provider

especially during pregnancy to avoid harm to the patient or their developing fetus.

Diet in pregnancy also plays a key role in the health and well-being of the patient and her

developing fetus. Making sure to eat a well-balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegatables, low fat

dairy products and protein. The patient should avoid foods and drinks full of added sugars and

saturated fats. Pregnant patients should avoid certain fish such as bigeye tuna, marlin, shark,

swordfish and tilefish due to their high levels of mercury per the Office of Disease Prevention

and Health Promotion (2023). Babies exposed to mercury in the womb can have brain damage,

and hearing and vision problems. Pregnant patients should also drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.
