Why Legalize the Sale of Organs

Candis Wilson College of Education, Grand Canyon University Eng-106: English Composition II Stephanie Palenque August 28, 2022

Why Legalize the Sale of Organs Whether or not to legalize the sale of human organs has been an ongoing debate for many years. Many reasons have been given on why this should not be legalized, one reason is the thought that this type of system would take advantage of the poor. There are other fallacies that are argued that have made this an almost impossible system to put in place. The ratio of donors to recipients is very different and putting a system like this in place could be very beneficial in many ways. There are however some obstacles that do have to be overcome. Of course, the legal sale of organs would have to be those that a paid donor could only live with one of such as a kidney. As of 2021, those on the kidney wait is at an astronomical number of 90,483, with only 24,670 transplants taking place (organdonor, 2021). Legalizing the sale of organs would be beneficial to the health care system with modifications and policies in place for compensation and seller eligibility, it will dramatically reduce the donor wait list, and in the long run put a stop to illegal organ trafficking. Many have objected to this type of policy for thinking that rich people would possibly take advantage of the poorer. It is suggested that only rational people would only sell an organ in severe desperation which would in turn be the poorer people of the community (Greasley, 2014). This is where remaining anonymous as a seller or buyer would be a beneficial policy. A set compensation should be set regardless of financial status, but the compensation should vary due to the condition of the organ. The variables of health and how someone lived their life could change the condition and sustainability of the organ, such as smoking, drinking or drug use. Though the system would still probably be consisted of more poverty-stricken people selling their organs, the market of the organ sales may even need to rely on such thing for its very

(Kolnsberg,2003). With legalizing the sale of organs, the government can be involved, and a guarantee of payment can be granted. This is help decrease the need or use of black-market organs. The decrease in the black-market organs can also increase the safety of those donating and receiving organs (Siraj, 2022). There are many reasons why the legal sale of organs can help. Organ selling can lead to the growth of a new industry and decrease that of the black-market (Kolnsberg, 2003). Though many believe that only the poor would be the ones to take advantage of this situation to sell their organs, even so this would greatly increase the number of donors needed. It seems that the buying and selling of organs is an unstoppable occurrence, so then leaving it totally unregulated causes more harm than good. Putting policies and regulations in place can provide protection for the donors and recipients, and even enables the poor to receive transplants just as equal as the rich (Siraj, 2022). As part of the medical field now we provide compensation for blood, men’s semen, bone marrow and human tissue. The sale of human organ would only be falling in line to these while also helping those in need while providing reasonable compensation for the seller, increase the donor list, and hopefully eliminate the black-market.
