A BASHFUL GIRL WHO KNOWS HOW TO JOKE

By: Karen Dela Rama

Ever since I can remember, I was naturally quiet and shy. I constantly

repeated myself because people could not hear me the first time. Even then, I seldom

made eye contact with others. While many like to believe that shy people live in self-

doubts or struggle with low self-esteem, well for me it’s not the case. I believe that we

have this certain type of personality and in the ravine of our mind, it’s normal. And

being normal has no definition.

Me: What kind of tea is hard to swallow?

Hubby: I’ve been in food and beverage industry for years but I didn’t encounter that

kind of tea, what is that tea?

Me: Reality (laugh)

Hubby: _ Anyway, “How do I look?”

Me: “With your eyes.”

Telling other people what I feel is really hard, expressing my thoughts and

opinion defends on who I’m talking with. But I want you to know that I’m normal. I’m

breathing the same air as you. I can also tell jokes if I want to. I see things that you

see and I have a vision and a dream just like everybody else. I may not talk a lot just

like you do but that doesn’t mean I’m snob. I just don’t’ want to talk.

Marites: How come you became a teacher when you’re shy, how can you teach your

students?

Me: Just like what I’ve said, my shyness and my ability to talk defends on who I’m

talking with.

There are times that people tell me to stop dreaming. That my parents should

stop sending me to school because it just a waste of time and money. But I never

listen, my parents never listened to them. I want them to know that this is me, I’m not

born to please anybody. My parents decided to give me life so, I also want to give

them the life that they deserve.

I’m a silent warrior, continuously battling my weaknesses and imperfections.

Dreaming for the better future of my students. Wishing to the shooting stars that life

must be easy on me. Believing that God is always there watching and guiding us from

above. Hoping that my family will always safe from any form of harm. Silently praying

for my son’s better future. Trying to be a good wife to my husband and the best mother

to my son. Wanting to lead my students into the right path so they won’t lost in life.

I maybe a shy girl but I know how to jest in this world full of pleasantry. I can

sway with the rhythm of life and can fight with the challenges that comes on my way.
